Fingerprints for new SIM card
In India, to obtain a SIM card, the
subscriber may have to provide his/her finger prints. This is going to be mandatory
in near future. The mobile network operators have been told by the Ministry of Home
Affairs to obtain fingerprints or any other bio-metric details of the subscriber
before giving a new mobile connection.
Also, the Department of Telecom (DOT) was
told to maintain a centralized database of all mobile subscribers with bio-metric parameters.
Under the current guidelines, the mobile operators
will be held responsible for any wrong information given by the subscribers to
obtain new connections. However, the authorized sellers of SIM cards are made
to give an undertaking that they have seen the applicant and the photograph in
the application form matches the applicant. On receipt of any forged documents from the
applicants, a police complaint against such subscribers should be registered immediately.
